Resumen

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an Alphavirus belongs to the Old World group; these arthritogenic viruses causing febrile illness characterized by arthralgias and myalgias. Although fatal cases during CHIKV infection are rare, the disease may be disabling and generate a broad spectrum of atypical manifestations such as cardiovascular, respiratory, eye, kidney and skin complications among others. CHIKV is not considered a neurotropic virus; however, it can cause neurological disease, especially in the elderly and children, causing severe and permanent sequelae. When joint pain persists three or more months results in the chronic form of the disease called post chikungunya chronic inflammatory arthritis, which constitutes the main disease sequel. CHIKV outbreaks had been reported in Africa, Asia, and Europe, until late of 2013, the virus introduction to the America continent was documented; since then, the virus spread to 45 countries and territories causing around 2 million cases in just two years. This review describes CHIKV molecular biology, the clinical manifestations of the disease, pathogenesis and significant post-infection complications.
